Bonded T1 is an excellent option for companies which need more bandwidth than a one T1 (1.5 Mbps) circuit can provide, but are not yet ready for the jump to fractional or full T3 45Mbps). Up to eight T1 circuits can be bonded, for up 12 megabits per second (Mbps). A DS3 (also referred to as T3) circuit is the equivalent of 28 T1s. Bonded T1s allow incremental growth (the addition of one T1 at a time, as needed), more efficient budgeting (the jump from a T1 to a T3 increases monthly costs by thousands of dollars), the elimination of months of waiting while a T3 line is installed to your premises, and the thousands of dollars it would cost to install the special wiring that is needed for a T3 circuit if your building is not already “lit” (wired for DS3). Bonded T1 is provided through pairs of twisted copper “telephone” wires. For this reason, bonded T1 is available to virtually any business in the US. Bonded T1 is often installed for free, and can be provided as managed (with router), or unmanaged (without router). Often managed bonded circuits will only cost a few dollars more than unmanaged. If your bandwidth needs exceed 12 Mbps, then fractional T3, burstable T3, or full T3 could be more efficient options, depending on your bandwidth usage patterns. T3 rates are determined by market conditions, cost of facilities, and most important, distance from the point of presence (PoP) of the quoting provider. The further a business is from the PoP, the more it costs to extend a T3 circuit to this business. Another aspect relevant to T3 rates is the “build-out” of proper wiring to and at the served premise. T3 requires special wiring. Most businesses are not properly wired, or “lit” for T3. In these cases, installation of appropriate wiring can cost thousands of dollars. If the end user needs less than 12 mbps, bonded T1 (bonded DS1) can be a much less expensive alternative. Since a bonded T1 circuit only requires two pairs of phone lines, it can be installed free of charge to virtually any business location in the US. If your business premise is wired for T3 (lit), then full T3 can provide substantial savings for bandwidths over 12 mbps. If more than 12 mbps is needed but a full T3 is not, fractional or burstable T3 are often more cost effective options. However, with any form of T3, the cost of build-out will be a reality if the building which will be served is not lit. Because the cost of build-out cannot be determined without a great deal of assessment by trained technicians, build-out charges are very seldom included with T3 quotes. Most major providers will not endure the expense of build-out assessment until after the customer commits to a signed application. Commonly, if build-out proves to be too expensive, then the application is terminated without cost to the customer. Regardless of cost of build-out, because price per mbps for full T3 is commonly less than half the price per mbps of T1, the resulting monthly savings compensates for T3 build-out costs within a few months.
